NOTE: Filming for Unabomb was supposed to start in January 2018; it’s now November 2018 and there have been no updates since December 2017. Viggo Mortensen has been talking about Falling as his next project. Unabomb is still listed in IMDb with status of “pre-production,” but at this point we assume that it has been cancelled or at least postponed indefinitely.

Unabomb centers on one of the largest manhunts of history as FBI agent Jim Freeman, played by Viggo Mortensen, takes on the unsolved case of the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski, who in the course of two decades, terrorized Americans with 16 bombings.

Freeman and his team travel the country piecing a profile of the infamous hooded suspect. The closer they get to narrowing down the terrorist’s identity, the more deadly and personal the attacks become.

According to the Film & Television Industry Alliance (FITA), filming was scheduled to begin February 2018 in the Vancouver area of British Columbia, Canada. British Columbia Magazine gave a start date of January 2018.

Viggo Mortensen’s ‘Unabomb’ Nets Multiple Sales for IM Global – May 2017 – reports on plans for the film. “‘It has a high-caliber studio, director and producer, and Viggo Mortensen is an Academy Award nominee and an actor at the top of his game, with unerring good taste across his previous projects,’ IM Global CEO Stuart Ford told Variety. ‘It also has a brilliant, fast, twist-laden plot, and distributors have responded to all of these elements.'”

The film is based on Jim Freeman, Terry Turchie and Donald Max Noel’s book Unabomber: How the FBI Broke Its Own Rules to Capture the Terrorist Ted Kaczynski.
